Ship cancellations

 

 

In the following I show a number of ship cancellations used on the Finnish coast
there is a number of inland maritime cancellations - all quite rare

used a) 1894-1907  b) 1896-1900

Postmark found in 2 types a) 24mm and b) 20mm

used at Helsinki (similar rare type used at Hangö)

   
Nyslott * Savonlinna Ships-cancel
very rare - known used 1899-1902
   
Wiborg Ships-cancel
rare - known used 1903-12
difficult to see - but WIBORG written on vessels bow.
Probably used on route Wiborg-Bjørneborg
   
Oval Turku Ships-cancel
used 1897-1907
 
   
Turku Tri-Lingual Ships-cancel
Type 1  -  one big star

2 ring postmark used in Turku - Åbo from May 1912 to 1914 for Ship mail

   
Turku Tri-Lingual Ships-cancel
Type 2  -  one big dot
   
Turku Tri-Lingual Ships-cancel
Type 3  -  3 small stars

Type 3 with Russian text removed - all 3 found with and without Russian text. after 1914 these cancellations were used as arrival-postmarks only.

   
Ship cancellation with text POSTI * POST below ship,  used 1907-1939 and again in 1950'ties.

Postmark is often unclear and the number of small differences that can be found in this postmark but they are often very difficult to distinguish.

Similar types known used at Turku, Helsinki, and Savonlinna (Nyslott),

   
Turku-ship cancellation - also called Torpedo -  only  known used on 4  dates 7th, 8th, 11th and 13th May 1911 - extremly rare.

Bore mail

card does not fit this page about postmarks, but is still interesting part of Finnish maritime mail

Bore sank in the morning of 31. Dec. 1899 between Turku and Stockholm  read more

 

   
Endorsement: "medf. ångf. Gustafsberg"

another kind of maritime mail: card from 1902 to Sweden endorsed with name of vessel.
